Title: Head Bowling Coach

Jackson College welcomes veteran area bowler Steve Sears as assistant bowling coach for the new teams.

Sears has been bowling for 50 years and is a member of the Jackson Bowling Hall of Fame. Over his lifetime he has rolled 24 perfect 300 games and 26 800 series. He bowls in three leagues himself and participates in a few tournaments.

“(Coach) Corey Daniels called me up one day and asked me if I would be interested in helping out, and I thought it was a good fit,” Sears said. “I think we have a pretty good team assembled for our first-year program. There is a lot of good talent in this area.”

In coaching today’s college players, Sears said they try to teach bowling, the skill and discipline, as well the mental aspect. “A lot of people probably don’t think about how that can affect your game. Not only is it about how to help the kids line up, but it’s also, how do we not get down on ourselves if things go badly? This is how we’re going to attack this, this is how we’re going to be smart, and that can give us a little advantage over our competitors.”

Sears is enjoying the new men’s and women’s teams, now in their first season. He also coached at Vandercook Lake High School, where they have four conference championships and three regional championships.

Sears is a lifelong Jackson resident and married to wife, Marianne.
